In today’s edition:

Langley hosts the biggest girls rugby sevens tournament in the province - happening TODAY!

Something worth knowing about if you're looking for something fun to do today.

Langley Secondary School is hosting 16 high school girls' rugby teams at McLeod Park in a full day of rugby sevens, the biggest girls' tournament of its kind in BC. It was started by LSS athletic director Dave Sheppard, who noticed there was no local tournament dedicated specifically to girls' teams, so he built one.

With Canada's women's rugby sevens team winning silver at the 2024 Olympics, the sport is growing fast and today Langley gets to be part of that story.

Free to watch, open to the public, and a genuinely great Friday outing. Head to McLeod Park off 56th Avenue in Langley City.

Restaurant of The Week

Annora

My personal favorite local fine dining spot!

Annora has been quietly sitting on 204th Street in Langley City since 2016, earning a loyal following and a 4.9-star Google rating without much fanfare. Chef-owner Aaron Turkstra trained at Dubrulle culinary school and worked at some of Vancouver's top restaurants before opening his own place right here in Langley. The food shows it.

The menu changes with the seasons and features things like herb-crusted lamb rack, seared sablefish with scallion pesto mash, handmade gnocchi, and braised short rib. The three-course prix fixe is around $48, which is genuinely great value for this level of cooking. They even source from Milner Valley Farms down the road.

Small space, big reputation, and reservations book up fast, especially on weekends. Worth a call this weekend.

300 New Seats Coming to R.E. Mountain Secondary

If your family is on the Willoughby slope, this is the news you've been waiting for.

The Province announced this week that R.E. Mountain Secondary is getting a $42 million, three-storey addition with 300 new student seats. And this isn't just extra space for overflow - the addition includes an art room, culinary lab, media and technology room, and science rooms, which means students will actually get access to more elective courses, not just more desks.

It's been designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 82 percent, and EV charging infrastructure is baked in from the start.

Construction starts summer 2027, with students in the new wing by late 2028. Between this and the two brand new schools coming to the Smith neighbourhood in fall 2027, the Willoughby slope is finally getting the school capacity it has needed for years.

Rising costs squeezing Fraser Valley farmers

The Province announced a new task force this week to look into the rising fertilizer and fuel costs hitting BC's farming sector, costs Fraser Valley growers have been dealing with for years.

It's a step, but farmers are looking for actual relief, not just a study. Nothing concrete has been announced yet. For Langley, where farming is still deeply woven into the community's identity, this is a story worth following. We'll keep you posted.
